Listen, then drag notes into each measure below. You can also select a note and tap a measure to add it. Fill every measure with the correct number of beats, then check your answer. Each correct full beat earns one point (two dotted-quarter note beats per measure in 6/8). In melody mode, identify the rhythm only; pitches are not marked.

Use Select measure to choose which measure to clear. Tap the staff to add a note. Undo restores your last edit.

Use Present to Class for reading, clapping or whole-class dictation. Dictation answers can be built on screen and checked. Homework rounds finish with a verification code.

Rhythm Dictation: a quick guide

Your goal

Listen to the rhythm and drag in the notes you hear. Make sure each measure adds up to the right number of beats.

Try an example

In 4/4, three quarter notes and a pair of eighth notes fill a measure: 1 + 1 + 1 + ½ + ½ = 4. Count the eighth notes as “4-and” if they come on the last beat.

Easy to mix up

Count how long the notes last, not just how many there are. In 6/8, six eighth notes usually group into two dotted-quarter note beats.

A tip for your next go

Keep counting as you listen. Build one beat at a time, then check the whole measure. Each complete beat can earn a point.
